I currently just use Reminders. I’ve tried others but they are, as you said, bloated. Things was good but expensive. I used Notion for work, but it’s not fast.
I’ve bounced between all the usual suspects: Things3, Superlist, Apple Reminders, Google Tasks, Tick Tick…..
As someone who uses both an android and iPhone, I find myself using Apple reminders and Google tasks the most. Why both? Simply put, I add reminders only the fly, when tasks pop in to my head and that double tap on the side button that activates Siri or Gemini, who listen intently and capture tasks without friction, is just so convenient. My point: I want the fewest amount of clicks to speak or type my task and I want it to work cross platform. Task apps on the market are also often over engineered. Simple UX, engaging UI and cross platform support would be priorities for me. Good luck and wishing you success 👍
Fewest amounts of clicks is paramount in my opinion too, so is cross platform. I use both iOS and Android as well and I hear you. I appreciate the feedback!
Hi E. Like many, I have tried and kicked the tires on all the usual suspects. I always end back up with Reminders. I am huge Apple fan and truly do like to use the stock apps whenever possible. I really like Reminders and don't have many complaints. The ONE thing that I would change is the Natural Language Processing. Fortunately this has gotten better the last few updates, but it is not as "smart" as others without an extra press/click. I use Remind Me Faster (iOS/iPadOS) and Reminders MenuBar (macOS) to workaround that issue since they take the NLP more literally. I like how Reminders it integrated and can more easily be used with Siri (which makes sense being stock).
Apple Reminders - Mainly because it’s the easiest way to having interactive widget on the homesceeen without having to jump through hoops. I’m a huge Apple Fan and I like that it’s embedded across all my devices and calendars.
I like creating smart lists for grocery shopping and then To Do lists for personal and work life separated.
I was a die hard Todoist user for years! I loved the simplicity of it, and the ability to type in something like "Meet John for coffee in 1 week at 3pm" and it would parse out all of the info from that in the right fields.
I recently switched to Apple Reminders mostly because of the Siri integration and the ability to "just get something out of my head and written down fast". It's definitely not the magic bullet to end all todo/task apps, but it's where I'm at for right now {sigh}. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you and Alex are working on!
I use TickTick (the free version). I'd prefer to use something more simple like Microsoft To Do, but the ability to add tasks with natural language in TickTick is important for me. Although To Do has a similar feature, I feel that it's not as good as TickTick.
That said, here are a some of my favorite useful features in TickTick:
- Ability to add tasks with natural language
- Ability to add more information (due date and time and short notes) to tasks
- Ability to add repeated tasks
- Ability to add nested tasks
- Ability to make nested tasks repeated
- Ability to add list and organize tasks
- Cross-platform availability (macOS, Android, and iOS) as I'm trying to stay out of one specific ecosystem ever since your Ecosystem Independence video
I switched around different to-do apps. Started with MS To Do, but switched to a to-do inside Noton, and to no to-do app at all. Then I tried Todoist, and now I'm on TickTick. I've also tried Google Tasks before, and I think it's great because of the Google Calendar integration, however I didn't stick to it as it didn't allow me to repeat nested tasks.
I use Google tasks. It's so simple, so reliable, and I can just tell my pixel to do it and not have to worry about it. The thing I need the most in a task app is to take over for the native task app. If I can tell my assistant to create a task and the app can take the information, I'll be more than happy to try it!
Hello Mr. E! For personal use, I use the native reminders app on iOS, but for work I use Microsoft To-Do since it integrates natively with office tools. The features I like the most are:
- Ability to create different lists.
- Ability to mark one task as more important and that a “smart” list is added with the “important” items.
- Ability to add a reminder date and a due date and filter my tasks by due date so I can focus on the tasks that are due soon.
- Ability to add sub tasks for the task (I normally add a task like “Create architecture document” and the su tasks are “research and come up with different scenarios”, “create the draft” etc. I also like that I can check the su tasks already completed so I know which ones are done
- Ability to add notes to the tasks to add URLs, or thoughts, etc.
- Ability to see my to do list and manage it on different platforms (PC, web browser in case I am using Linux, iOS, a Android)
Some time ago I used a free software named “Timeful”, which had a feature I have not seen in any other app. In this app, you could determine how much hours would you need to finish the task. Based on the task’s due date, and in the hours you estimated you would need to finish it, it would recommend you, and add to a calendar, time slots of 1 hour or 2 hours (You could also customize how long where your time slots), the days you requiere to work on the task to achieve the total hours before the due date. This helped to create a clear plan on what to do when, knowing that if you followed the plan, you would get to all your tasks in time. The app followed the idea of “If you don’t schedule something in your calendar, it is likely that it will not get done”. So, the app created my plan, based on my to do tasks’ due date. The app also let you define which week days, and from what time to what time you work, and the app followed these settings to suggest the plan. Of course, you could also shift tasks around if needed.
Google purchased the app and then they killed it, it does not exist anymore :(.
Sorry for the extensive post Mr. E, I hope any of these ideas help :).

My wife and I use TickTick. We both use it for work, personal, and family tasks, to include our grocery list.
My favorite features are: 1) smart recurring and snoozing, 2) color-coded lists, and 3) cross platform (iOS, Mac, Windows).
I like that I can set a task to every third Wednesday of the month.
I also like that I can choose between a task recurring on date or by completion.
